Huge male Lion drags a zebra carcass chased by Jackals. This male lion (called Osupaat) had been with two females for several days and had been mating with both of them. We got news that he had killed a zebra so off we went to find him and his females. When we arrived at the scene the two females had obviously had their fill and were sitting in the shade. The male was sitting next to the carcass and was being pestered by Jackals. Most of the internal organs of the Zebra had been eaten. The male lion chased away one of the Jackals and to our surprise picked up the Zebra carcass and started to drag it towards the resting females or perhaps to some shade. This was a monumental effort. He would drag the carcass for perhaps a minute and then need to rest. He did this more than fifteen times. At each rest the jackals would rush up and try to get morsels of food. We left him as he took an extended rest. The power of the lion was remarkable. The zebra would have weighed around 200 kg although perhaps one third had been eaten. A male Lion can weigh around 175kg so this was a heavy burden for the Lion to drag a considerable distance.
