Lion on an Eland carcass – Maasai Mara, Kenya 2025

Lion on an Eland carcass. Some lions of the River pride in the Mara North Conservancy, of Kenya’s Maasai Mara had taken down a male Eland. An adult male Eland is around 1.6 m tall at the shoulder and can weigh up to 900 kg. So to take down such prey is no easy task! When we arrived at the scene, most of the pride had had their fill and were resting in the shade. A lone lioness was still eating although her belly suggested she had had a significant amount to eat. She tried to drag the Eland carcass into the shade but this was a major challenge given the size and weight of the prey. After several attempts she gave up and lay down exhausted. Watching this Lion on an Eland carcass was a good way to appreciate the power of a lion and the size of an Eland.
