Male lions see off an unwelcome lioness – Maasai Mara, Kenya 2025

Male lions see off an unwelcome lioness. It was still not quite light when we reached the plain in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy of Kenya’s Maasai Mara. In the distance we could hear quite a commotion with hyenas yipping and jackals barking. Was this the scene of a lion kill? We headed towards the sounds. We could now see there were three male lions (the Hamerkop males) were finishing off a wildebeest kill. It seemed unlikely that they had made the kill because although there was very little of the wildebeest left, their bellies were not full. We speculated that their father (Osupat, the dominant male) had made the kill and he had his fill and then let his sons eat. In addition there were two lionesses around and we first assumed they were from the same pride. However, the males took exception to their presence and with much growling and snarling chased the lionesses away. Clearly they were interlopers. Quite a scene as male lions see off an unwelcome lioness. The jackals never stopped barking!
