Cape Buffalo head for a waterhole and a welcome drink. It was a hot and very dry day at Kavinga Safari Camp, Mana Pools, Zimbabwe. A large and growing dust cloud in the distance heralded the arrival of a large herd of Cape Buffalo heading towards a waterhole. The herd emerged from a group of trees and made their way leisurely towards the water. The hooves of several hundred animals certainly kicked up a dust storm. They then all began to trot towards the water where they slaked their thirst. One could see the level of the water drop as all these animals had a very much needed drink of water. There was much jostling for space and tempers frayed a little as they pushed and shoved to get near the water. After perhaps 20 minutes, they had had their fill and they headed off back whence they came. It had been quite a spectacle watching as this herd of Cape Buffalo head for a waterhole and a welcome drink
Cape buffalo are massive and heavily built herbivores. They are about 1.4m at the shoulder and males can weigh up to 700kg. The number of animals in a herd varies from 20-30 individuals up to several thousand.
