A huge male white rhino takes a mud bath. Ahead of our visit to Kicheche Laikipia Camp in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya our goal was to spend time with both white and black rhino. Of particular interest was to record them wallowing in mud baths. We had to wait almost to the end of our stay to see this happen. A huge male rhino walked up to a water hole and immediately began to take a mud bath. Watching a creature of this size roll around in the muddy water was a sight to behold. There was much splashing and grunting as he rolled around in the sticky mud. It was stunning to see him on his back with his legs in the air! Once suitably covered in mud he wandered off taking a drink of water as he went. As he left the scene he was kicking up dust in the bone dry terrain. It was a dream come true to watch as a huge male white rhino takes a mud bath. Kicheche Laikipia Camp had not let us down! The Ol Pejeta Conservancy does an incredible job in conserving and protecting these wonderful animals that are so often persecuted and poached for their horns which clearly have no magical health-giving properties despite the huge demand from uneducated people. It is so important to secure the future of these impressive animals.
