A newly born giraffe. We came upon this newly born giraffe calf just a minute or two after it had been born. It was still wet and very unsteady on its feet. It was mid afternoon near Kicheche Bush Camp in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Maasai Mara, Kenya. The umbilical cord was still hanging out of the mother and she was licking her new infant. We were fortunate enough to witness the first suckling by this calf. A newly born giraffe is very vulnerable to predators and needs to learn to walk quickly. Let’s hope this youngster has a long life!
