African buffalo with newly-born calf – Maasai Mara 2019

African buffalo with newly-born calf. This African buffalo had given birth a few minutes before we arrived on the scene. The calf was still wet with remnants of the umbilical cord still attached and was very unsteady on its feet. However, in no time at all it began running in circles around its mother. There were lots of predators in the area so there was no time to waste in getting ready to run for its life.

Cows first calve at five years of age. Gestation lasts for 11 months and births occur in readiness for the rainy season.
