Amazing Antelopes of the Kalahari desert. The Kalahari Desert of South Africa is home to a range of stunning animals, from meerkats to Wild Dogs and Black-maned Lions. But some of the most striking creatures are the antelopes. We had great views of Sable, Roan and Oryx.
The sable antelope, known for its striking appearance and impressive curved horns, is native to the savanna and woodland habitats of southern Africa. Males are particularly notable for their glossy black coats. Their horns are an average of 102cm in length. Sable antelopes are social animals, typically found in small herds led by a dominant male, which protects the group from predators. They are browsers, favouring a diet of grasses, leaves, and shrubs. Their elegance and strength make them a symbol of the African wilderness.
The roan antelope, an impressive and robust herbivore, is native to the savannah and open woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. Characterised by its striking coloration, which includes a reddish-brown coat and white facial markings, the roan antelope boasts long, smooth horns which average 75cm in length. These antelopes are social creatures, often seen in small herds that include a mix of males, females, and their young. They primarily graze on grasses and are known for their keen eyesight and agility, which help them evade predators.
The oryx is a striking antelope species renowned for its stunning straight horns and distinctive coloration, typically featuring a combination of light tan or white fur with dark markings. Horns average 85cm in length. Found in arid regions of Africa, oryx are well-adapted to desert life, capable of surviving with minimal water by extracting moisture from the vegetation they consume. These social animals often form small herds, which provide protection against predators.
