Frosty Bison by the Firehole River – Yellowstone, USA 2023

Frosty Bison by the Firehole River. It was a very cold morning as we drove along the road at the the side of the Firehole River, in Yellowstone National Park. The steam from the geysers and fumaroles lay heavy in the air. We came across these frost-encrusted Bison next to the river. The scene was spectacular with the fumaroles belching steam in the background, the frosty trees and the river. We watched as the Bison meandered along the river bank seeking out what meagre food they could find. So good to see these frosty bison by the Firehole River.

Bison are massive creatures. Adults can be up to 2m in height and 3.5m in length. They can weigh unto 1,270kg. Bison travel in herds and are nomadic grazers. There is nothing quite like seeing a herd of bison in the massive landscape that is Yellowstone National Park.
