Giant River Otters feasting – Pantanal, Brazil 2019

Giant River Otters feasting. We had several very good encounters with Giant River Otters in Brazil’s Pantanal. This group were feeding and very succesful they were.

The giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) is up to 1.7 metres (5.6 ft) long. Unlike other mustelids, the giant otter is a social species, with family groups of three to eight members. The groups are centered on a dominant breeding pair and are both cohesive and cooperative. The species is territorial, and aggression has been observed between groups. The giant otter is diurnal and is the noisiest otter species. Distinct vocalizations have been documented that indicate alarm, aggression, and reassurance.
