Hippo along the river bank – Maasai Mara 2024

Hippo along the river bank. There had been an enormous amount of rain in Kenya’s Maasai Mara in January 2024. This river, which is normally running at a trickle at best, was in full spate and now a raging torrent. One creature very happy with the rain and the very full river was the hippo. We found large numbers of hippos in the river, particularly at bends in the river where the water flow was not too aggressive. We were delighted to see one hippo walking along the river bank munching as it went. Quite what spooked it and made it run was not clear. After that burst of activity it continued it stroll along the bank before entering the water. The blows of all the other hippos can be heard in the background. Watching this hippo along the river bank was a real treat in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, near Kicheche Bush Camp.
