Hippos in the river. There had been an enormous amount of rain in Kenya’s Maasai Mara in January 2024. This river, which is normally running at a trickle at best, was in full spate and now a raging torrent. One creature very happy with the rain and the very full river was the hippo. We found large numbers of hippos in the river, particularly at bends in the river where the water flow was not too aggressive. The hippos would come up for air exhaling as they did so causing a huge blow. The sounds were impressive and reminiscent of whale watching! With so much long grass because of the rain, these hippos in the river did not have far to walk to feed.
