Hyenas, vultures and marabou storks on an elephant carcass – Maasai Mara 2024

Hyenas, vultures and marabou storks on an elephant carcass. In the Mara North Conservancy in Kenya’s Maasai Mara we came across this elephant carcass which had attracted many scavengers. The elephant had died of natural causes. Marabou storks and vultures were coming and going whilst the hyenas tucked into a very smelly meal. Several of the hyenas spent quite some time in the body cavity of the elephant – they came out looking rather disgusting. These scavengers do a very good job as cleaners of the bush!. Certainly it was necessary to position the vehicle upwind of the carcass because the stench was truly dreadful. Fascinating to see hyenas, vultures and marabou storks on an elephant carcass.
