Lunge-feeding Humpback whales. It was a gloriously sunny day in Gull Cove on North Chichagof Island, in South East Alaska. The snow covered mountains created the perfect backdrop. We spotted large numbers of gulls, mostly Kittiwakes dipping and diving into the sea. This clearly indicated the presence of several bait balls scattered around. There were numerous Humpback Whales in the area which were lunge feeding on the bait balls. It was, however, difficult to predict which bait ball they would target next. After missing several lunges, I managed to film a Humpback Whale bursting out of the water amidst the somewhat shocked Kittiwakes. A most impressive sight – Lunge-feeding Humpback whales!
