Playful Gentoo Penguins. There is a large Gentoo Penguin colony on Cuverville Island on the Antarctic Peninsula. It is both noisy and very smelly. But these are amazing penguins. Behind me was the colony and many penguins were making their way down to the sea. I watched as several penguins leapt on and off a small iceberg, often squabbling with each other as they did so. I spent a very happy hour watching these playful gentoo penguins.
Gentoo Penguins are the third largest of all the penguins after Emperor and King Penguins.Standing some 90cm tall and weighing up to 8.5kg, they are an impressive bird. Whilst somewhat ungainly on land they are adept swimmers.
