Polar Bear dragging and caching a Harp Seal – Svalbard 2025

Polar Bear dragging and caching a Harp Seal. We could see the trail of blood some distance away as we sailed along the edge of the pack ice north of Svalbard. Then from behind a block of ice we could see the polar bear with its Harp seal kill. Why was this Polar Bear dragging a Harp Seal kill for such a long distance? There were no other Polar Bears in the vicinity as far as we could tell. Then the bear began to cover the seal with snow. This caching behaviour is occasionally witnessed with Polar Bears on a kill, particularly if the kill is too big to consume in one go. It is likely this caching is to hide the kill for a few days so other bears and scavengers including birds cannot locate it. Several birds gathering on a carcass may give other bears a clue as to the location of a kill (Stirling et al, Arctic Science, 2019 vol 6, p410-52). An unusual sighting to witness a Polar Bear dragging and caching a Harp seal kill.
