This Bison carcass was providing welcome food for several animals. This Red Fox was enjoying the feast but was constantly having to chase away the Ravens which were also taking full advantage of an easy meal.
Yellowstone’s Red Fox is is the Rocky Mountain Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes macroura). Adult males weigh in at about 4.5-5.5kg whilst females are generally about 4.5kg. In Yellowstone they can live for up to 11 years but 3-7 years is more typical. These animals are usually nocturnal but during the winter they are more active. They will avoid both Coyotes and Wolves but will scavenge Wolf kills in the winter. The Red Fox preys on small rodents but are opportunistic hunters.
