Sparring Hippos on the river bank. There had been an enormous amount of rain in Kenya’s Maasai Mara in January 2024. This river, which is normally running at a trickle at best, was in full spate and now a raging torrent. One creature very happy with the rain and the very full river was the hippo. We found large numbers of hippos in the river, particularly at bends in the river where the water flow was not too aggressive.
These two hippos were out of the water and sparring vigorously. They went back into the river only to emerge later to continue their playful battle. The sounds of all the other hippos in the river made for an enchanting encounter watching these sparring hippos on the river bank..
