Sunrise with lions and hyenas on a wildebeest kill – Maasai Mara, Kenya 2025

Sunrise with lions and hyenas on a wildebeest kill. The sun was just rising when we reached the plain in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy of Kenya’s Maasai Mara. In the distance we could hear quite a commotion with hyenas yipping and jackals barking. Was this the scene of a lion kill? We headed towards the sounds. We could now see there were male lions (the Hamerkop males) finishing off a wildebeest kill. It seemed unlikely that they had made the kill because although there was very little of the wildebeest left, their bellies were not full. We speculated that their father (Osupat, the dominant male) had made the kill, had his fill and then let his sons eat. Hyenas were lurking in the background and every now and then one could be seen with a piece of the carcass. Watching the sunrise with lions and hyenas on a wildebeest kill was a great way to start the day. Sunrises in the Maasai Mara can be spectacular.
