Tasmanian Pademelon – Tasmania, Australia 2026

Tasmanian Pademelon. In the Cradle Mountain area of Tasmania we saw many Tasmanian pademelons mostly in the late evening. These small and curious marsupials were fun to see!

The Tasmanian pademelon (Thylogale billardierii), also known as the rufous-bellied pademelon or the red -bellied pademelon, is a small marsupial characterised by their short, stocky bodies, and distinctive dark brown to grey-brown fur with a reddish brown underbelly. Adult pademelons typically weigh between 2.5-12kg and stand about 0.6-1m tall when on their hind legs. They are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular. During the day they hide in dense ground cover/forest emerging to feed close to the forest edge. They are herbivores eating mostly at night. Their main predators are the Tasmanian devil, spotted-tailed quolls and wedge-tailed eagles.
