Resplendent Quetzal – Costa Rica 2019

The Resplendent Quetzal is resplendent indeed! We watched these Resplendent Quetzals in the Savegre Valley of Costa Rica. They were visiting a wild avocado tree close to a small, gurgling stream. They feed mostly on members of the avocado family The striking males have four very extended uppertail coverts (so not tail feathers) which dangle up to 75cm beyond the true tail. The females are also very attractive birds. The Resplendent Quetzal is a very special bird for all bird watchers.
