With a Serval Cat – Maasai Mara, Kenya 2025

With a Serval Cat. The sun had just come up in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Maasai Mara and it was still quite chilly. What was that movement in the long grass? Wow – a Serval Cat. After looking around, a quick head shake and a bit of grooming, it set off through the long grass weaving its way between larger clumps of grass.I t was clearly hunting in the cool of the morning. We eventually lost it amongst longer grass and bushes but this had been a lovely sighting of this quite elusive cat. Spending time with a Serval Cat is a very good way to start a game drive!

The Serval is mainly nocturnal and crepuscular; this is a slender, spotted cat with long legs, a short tail and prominent, rounded ears. It stands about 60cm at the shoulder and weighs 8-15kg. It feeds on small mammals, birds, invertebrates and reptiles. It is vulnerable to a wide range of predators from Lions to Martial Eagles.
