Young Crested Black Macaques playing on the beach. Crested Black Macaque, also known as the Celebes Crested Macaque or the Sulawesi Crested Macaque, this old world monkey is primarily terrestrial. We found this group on the black beach at the edge of the forest. They are real characters and would often approach close and at times they would jump on our backs and heads – an alarming event! The Young Crested Black Macaques seemed to have great fun all the time as the adults foraged and groomed each other. Sadly, these critically endangered primates, their numbers are in decline as a consequence of habitat loss and hunting.
