Hippos battle in the river. There had been an enormous amount of rain in Kenya’s Maasai Mara in January 2024. This river, which is normally running at a trickle at best, was in full spate and now a raging torrent. One creature very happy with the rain and the very full river was the hippo. We found large numbers of hippos in the river, particularly at bends where the water flow was not too powerful.
Two hippos were constantly sparring in the deep and fast flowing water. It was a remarkable to watch as these hippos battle in the river. The confrontation went on for several hours. Hippos are quite extraordinary creatures.
