Polar Bear on a seal kill – Svalbard 2023

Polar Bear on a seal kill.  As we pushed through the ice heading into Raudfjord, Svalbard we could see many Glaucous Gulls in the distance. This indicated the presence of a carcass. As we got closer it was evident that a Polar Bear had taken a Bearded Seal. There was not much left of the carcass and the Glaucous Gulls were doing their level best to get some of the spoils. The Polar Bear had clearly had his fill but he was intent on keeping the gulls from his food. Soon the bear moved away from the remains of the seal, began eating blood-soaked ice and then cleaning his paws. He eventually wandered off and lay down to sleep off his feast. Super Svalbard!
