Sperm Whales – Baja, Mexico 2018

At the southern tip of the Baja peninsular and just off the Gorda banks we had an amazing encounter with more than ninety Sperm Whales. At first they were quietly logging at the surface but slowly they become more active and started to dive and become more dispersed. Initially all the whales were either females or calves but as the encounter unfolded, three huge bulls arrived and the whole group became even more active.

These whales are around 15m in length and weigh 13-45 tonnes. Bulls can be twice the size of the females. They have a large, squarish head, a single blow hole offset on the left of the head and wrinkled skin. They are capable of diving deeply and can stay submerged for long periods of time. They usually fluke when diving.
