A mob of Emus – Mungo National Park, Australia 2026

A mob of Emus. Exploring Mungo National Park In New South Wales, Australia we came across this mob of Emus which put on a great display for us. I love the collective noun for emus – mob! Spending quality time with a mob of Emus made for a fascinating encounter. These flightless birds are very impressive.

The emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the second-largest bird (after the Ostrich) in the world by height, native to Australia. Known for its long legs, large body, and distinctive three-toed feet, the emu can grow up to 1.9 meters (about 6.2 feet) tall and weigh between 18 to 60 kilograms (approximately 40 to 130 pounds). Emus are flightless; their small wings are not suited for flight but are used for balance and display during courtship. With powerful legs they can run at up to nearly 50km/h and cover large distances. Emus are omnivorous, feeding on a diverse diet that includes fruits, seeds, flowers, and insects, which they forage from the ground.
