A newborn Wildebeest calf takes its first tentative steps. As we explored the Olare Motorogi Conservancy in Kenya’s Maasai Mara we came across a small herd of Wildebeest. They were a little dispersed and grazing. Then, at a distance, we spotted one female giving birth. We were then able to watch as the small and wet calf took its first unsteady steps. Its mother was trying to clean up the calf at the same time. Once on its wobbly feet the calf’s first instinct was to feed. What a special sighting as a newborn Wildebeest calf takes its first tentative steps.
Calves are born just before the rains are due to begin and after a gestation period of about 250 days. At birth the calves weigh around 22kg and are able to run with their mother after just a few minutes.
