Crested Black Macaques, Sulawesi, Indonesia. Top of our viewing list on a recent visit to the Tangkoko Reserve in northern Sulawesi, was the critically endangered, Crested Black Macaque. Also known as the Celebes Crested Macaque or the Sulawesi Crested Macaque, this old world monkey is primarily terrestrial. We found this group on the black beach at the edge of the forest. They are real characters and would often approach close and at times they would jump on our backs and heads – an alarming event! Sadly their numbers are in decline as a consequence of habitat loss and hunting.
