One hour old giraffe calf and its mother. We first found this giraffe calf only a few minutes after it had been born in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy near Kicheche Bush Camp in the Maasai Mara. It had quickly learned to walk and within one hour was a proficient walker. After tending to her newborn the mother set off followed by her calf. It is essential that these newborn giraffes can walk soon after birth because they are vulnerable to predation. Indeed, later the same day we found some hyenas that had taken a new born giraffe calf – but not this one. The giraffe with her newly born calf both had the remains of the umbilical cord attached. This one hour old giraffe calf and its mother left us as they moved across the open plain.
