Penguin punch-up! All had been quiet at this Adelie Penguin colony on Yalour Islands on the Antarctic Peninsular. Chicks had been fed, parent pairs were displaying when all hell broke loose. A huge squabble broke out for no obvious reason and went on for several minutes. Then as quickly as it started all was peace and quiet again. A magnificent glacier made a wonderful back drop for this entertaining encounter.
The Adelie Penguin is a true Antarctic penguin and is highly gregarious and their colonis can be very noisy. They are a medium sized penguin standing some 70cm high and weighing up to 8 kg. They are often viewed as the archetypal penguin.
