Young Crested Black Macaques playing in the forest. Crested Black Macaques are also known as the Celebes Crested Macaque or the Sulawesi Crested Macaque. This old world monkey is primarily terrestrial. After playing on the beach in the early morning sun, they headed into the shade of the forest where playtime continued. They are real characters and would often approach close and at times they would jump on our backs and heads – an alarming event! The youngsters seemed to have great fun all the time as the adults foraged and groomed each other. Sadly, these critically endangered primates, are in decline as a consequence of habitat loss and hunting.
